How Journal Impact Factor is Calculated

The Journal Impact Factor reflects the average citation rate in a target year for citable items published in the preceding two calendar years. For example, the 2025 JIF (released in June 2026) evaluates citations received in 2025 by articles and reviews published in 2023 and 2024.

Key Technical Distinction

The numerator includes citations to all items (editorials, letters, corrections, and data notes), whereas the denominator strictly counts “citable items” (original research articles and review papers). This mathematical convention is why journals with heavy front-matter sometimes exhibit elevated impact metrics.

Understanding Journal Quartiles (Q1 to Q4)

Because absolute raw scores cannot be compared fairly across subject categories, Clarivate assigns journals into four percentile tiers based on their rank within specific JCR categories:

  • Q1 (Top 25%): Percentile rank ≥ 75%. Represents the top quarter of indexed journals in a field. Highly sought for grant compliance and promotion evaluations.
  • Q2 (25% – 50%): Solid, reputable journals with strong peer-review standards and stable citation velocity.
  • Q3 (50% – 75%): Established specialty or regional publications with targeted disciplinary audiences.
  • Q4 (Bottom 25%): Emerging titles or niche regional publications in the initial stages of indexing.

Impact Factor vs. Alternative Citation Metrics

While JIF remains the most widely cited metric in academia, modern research evaluation benefits from cross-referencing multiple bibliometric indicators:

  • CiteScore (Scopus): Uses a 4-year citation window and counts citations from the larger Scopus database. Freely accessible without a paywalled subscription.
  • SCImago Journal Rank (SJR): Weights citations based on the prestige and prestige-score of the citing source journal (PageRank algorithm).
  • Source Normalized Impact per Paper (SNIP): Adjusts raw citation counts for disciplinary differences, allowing direct cross-field comparisons.
